Reddit Explores Privacy-First Biometric Verification with Sam Altman’s World ID
As AI advances, age verification laws tighten, and bot abuse rises, Reddit is considering a novel approach to confirm user identity while safeguarding anonymity. The platform is reportedly in talks with Sam Altman’s World ID, a biometric system that uses iris scans—but crucially, does not store personal data—to help verify users’ uniqueness and age without compromising privacy.
According to sources cited by Semafor, Reddit is negotiating with World ID’s parent company to integrate this innovative verification technology.
Meeting the Challenge: Verifying Users Without Sacrificing Privacy
World ID’s technology scans a user’s iris via a device called the Orb, generating an encrypted, fragmented data set distributed securely across multiple servers worldwide. This cryptographic method makes it nearly impossible for hackers to reconstruct or misuse biometric information, especially since no personal data links the biometric scan to an individual’s identity.
Once verified, users receive a unique World ID stored safely on their devices. The system also incorporates built-in age verification, refusing scans if users appear under 18.
Why Reddit Needs This Now
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman recently highlighted the growing necessity of proving that users are real humans of legal age amid the rapid growth of AI-generated content and increasing regulatory pressure.
“We will do our best to preserve both the humanness and anonymity of Reddit,” Huffman assured users.
The urgency was underscored after researchers at the University of Zurich used AI to mimic Reddit users in unauthorized experiments, prompting legal action by Reddit.
At the same time, several U.S. states are enacting laws that require social platforms to verify user ages, making privacy-conscious verification solutions more important than ever.
Offering Choice in Verification
If implemented, Reddit would not make World ID the sole verification method. Instead, users could select from multiple third-party providers, empowering them to choose options that best suit their privacy and security needs.
World ID, developed by Altman’s company Tools for Humanity, officially launched its biometric iris scanning system in July 2023 and has since expanded operations globally.
